Danças na Cidade/Livros
Cotovia, 1998, Lisboa, 222 pages
ISBN: 972-8423-32-2, Price: €7,50 |
Between 1993 and 1998, Theaterschrift
was one of the main international publications on the
performing arts. Published in four languages (Dutch,
French, English, and German), it gave voice to a number
of artists in a series of high quality contributions
and interviews. In 1998, Danças na Cidade and
Edições Cotovia published the last editions,
Theaterschrift Extra, this time also in Portuguese. It
features several texts about dance, music, theatre and
performance that give an 'inside' view on the Portuguese
performing arts scene of the time.
Dance critic and anthropologist André Lepecki was
invited to coordinate a written 'confrontation' between Portuguese
artists and intellectuals and some of the statements published
in the 12 previous editions of Theaterschrift. The result
is a written dialogue between the international and Portuguese
arts worlds. |

Present
Movements gives an overview of the independent Portuguese
dance scene in the mid nineties, focusing on three elements:
the artistic, social and cultural activity of independent
choreographers and dance companies, the dynamics of structures
dealing with production and presentation and government
policies for creation and touring.

Movimentos was published in 1995 out of the need to
approach the new generation of choreographers and dancers
that had radically changed the Portuguese dance scene
in the beginning of the 90s.
Movimentos is organised in two parts.
The first part presents a series of interviews of dance
critic Maria de Assis with Portuguese choreographers: "Sixteen individual portraits
that, set side by side, constitute an important tool for
the study and comprehension of the so called New Portuguese
Dance movement." The second part of the book features
48 photographs of Portuguese contemporary dance by 9 photographers. |
