Born and raised in the suburbs of Lisbon, with no family connection to the arts, Paula Diogo was encouraged from an early age by her family to read in order to keep herself occupied. Her interest in books and stories led her to study Literature and later Theatre.
Her work is strongly influenced by her education and family background and addresses themes such as legacy, memory, autobiography and belonging. Her creations can take different forms, including performance, stage works, video/audio pieces and publications.
In recent years, she has worked across the broad spectrum of the performing arts, combining production and creation, developing ideas and projects for specific contexts, and taking part in informal discussion groups. She studied Theatre and Performing Arts in Portugal and Iceland, co-founded several collectives, and has worked with companies and artists in Portugal and abroad. Her work has been presented in Portugal, Iceland, Germany, Serbia, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, France, Italy, Mexico and Belgium.
She was one of the artists supported by apap – FEMINIST FUTURES, a project co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme (2021–2024). She is also a member of the Celestial Bodies collective, an international project dedicated to opening up spaces that integrate practices of solidarity, care, empathy and wonder. She lives in Lisbon.
“My creative work is driven by a desire to develop unlikely ideas. I am interested in thinking of performance as a space for shared experiences between audiences and performers, where we can experiment with different ways of seeing the world and of being together collectively.”
