Lukanu Mpasi returns to the studio of Espaço Alkantara to continue developing Matxikadu. This performance premiered at São Luiz Teatro Municipal as part of Kilombo, a programme curated by Aurora Negra for the 2023 Alkantara Festival.
Matxikadu is a dance and music performance addressing the stereotypes and experiences of Black men in Portugal, exploring questions of violence, affirmation of masculinity, strength, roots, and family. Portraying the Black man as a “machine” built from life experiences and everything he has been taught to be true. This performance reflects on how this man might overcome traumas and break free of stereotypes, in order to conquer his individual freedom and create his own future. The performance features a powerful sonic element, combining traditional Angolan music with newer electronic rhythms like hip-hop and kuduro.
Lukanu Mpasi (b. 1990) started dancing at age 9, beginning with African dances, then hip-hop and its variations, and later contemporary and modern dance. The need to express himself artistically led him to explore physical theatre in London, as well as street dance styles in New York and Los Angeles. He currently develops performance and video projects that bring together the various dance styles he has work on, mostly hip-hop, modern and African dances.
