Dressed to honour their roots and wings, Afro-diasporic bodies walk the runway with dreams of plural futures.
In Serei/Afrodiaspórica, Dori Nigro invokes autobiographical memories and Afro-American mythologies to weave together a vivid celebration of Black ancestrality — emblazoned with spirituality, dreams and resistence.
Drawing on the aesthetics of a runway show, but keeping its feet firmly on the ground, the piece suggests a path towards the future. Not a future to be chased after, but one that is constructed from the present, while looking to the past.
Serei/Afrodiaspórica is also a tribute to Black dressmaking in the diaspora — a fresh encounter with the fabrics, forms and gestures that have been appropriated yet in the many bodies of the Black diaspora. Set to the sound of the berimbau, afoxé and other Portuguese Afrodiasporic instruments, this runway is a place for dance, fashion and ancestral tradition. It becomes a place for affirming the Black bodies who occupy this stage; their memories, desires and future.
Incense is used during the performance.
Primarily standing room. Limited seating available.
