I was born just a few years after the war of independence and at the beginning of a civil war that would last 16 years, so I can say that my first relationship to life in general was a relationship of violence. The violence of 500 years of colonialism, 16 years of civil war, of a Marxist-Leninist regime.

Nowadays, violence is visibly conscious and exposed. We feel it, we are surrounded by it; it is somehow familiar. A strange combination of violence and tenderness, joy and sadness, egoism and fraternity – the things that make up a good many families – in the case of Mozambique has been taken too far, has became mixed up with years of war, became “mozambicanized”. Premature marriages, domestic violence, the violence of war, the violence of exile, sexual violence, the violence of words, gestures, looks…

And as women, just for being women, we are dispossessed psychologically, sexually, and in so many other ways, and still we feel the urge to fight to change our condition. We exist as women, each one of us abandoned by the moment.

Sexo (con)sentido, by Mozambican choreographer Kátia Manjate, is a kind of formal complaint, a story, a traumatic experience that raises questions about human rights, women’s liberation and sexuality. It manifests a woman’s desire to own her own body and administer the forms of pleasure that are important and satisfying to her, regardless of moral, religious, or other forms of control. The poetics of the piece arise from the conscious and unconscious movements of a body based on an emotional state and physical and emotional violence. It draws attention to this body, heavy with messages, in order to provoke a reflection on the taboos and systems of oppression that society has imposed on women.

On July 31, we open the doors of the studio for a public showing.
