The expression fazer das tripas coração describes turning weaknesses (literally, gut) into strengths (heart), a determination that allows limits to be overcome.

Trypas Corassão (Gut-heart) is an aesthetic-artistic-political project, a hybrid performance-music-theatre piece in three acts. The artistic residency at Alkantara is dedicated to the second act, an investigation into the aesthetics of ultra-romanticism. Using the languages of fado, bolero, brega, christianity, over-dramatic and the post-romantic, the performance attempts to address the borders, unborders, and reborders of love.

Artist Bio

Tita Maravilha is an actor, performer, singer, dancer, drag queen, clown, presenter, and DJ. She studied Performing Arts at Universidade de Brasília and is part of the theatre group Trazeiros de Teatro Caseiro and the anarco-funk group Rainhas do Babado. She performs and sings with the carnival groups Bloco do amor (Brasília) and Blocu’s (Lisbon) and with the performance-music group Cantigas Boleráveis. She studied at Escola Profissional de Teatro de Cascais in 2008. In Brasília, she works with local artists such as Simone Reis, Bia Medeiros, Gisele Rodrigues, and Hugo Rodas. In Lisbon, she is part of SOMA — a collective that creates performance-parties.

Ágatha Barbosa (a.k.a. Cigarra) is a DJ, music producer, and label manager. She came of age in the dense São Paulo underground scene and was a founding member of Voodoohop. For a decade, she has explored unique sets, creating her own sound spaces. She released EPs in 2016 (Límbica) and 2018 (Ato) with Tropical Twista Records, where she was also a manger and curated a 3-volume collection of work by 60 women artists, Hystereofônica, which has now become a monthly radio show (Radio Quântica, Lisbon). Ágatha is also an audio-visual performer involved in projects in Brazil, Portugal and Germany. Her investigation into the appropriation of samples (plunderphonics and copyleft) reveals a pop culture that is glocal, contemporary, and from the periphery.
